Chattanooga Fire Department Investigates Chemical Smell Wednesday Morning At Akzo Nobel Surface Chemistry

The Chattanoogan – Wednesday, March 20, 2019

The Chattanooga Fire Department was sent out Wednesday morning to investigate an acrid odor that residents were detecting in certain parts of Chattanooga.

During that investigation, a representative with Akzo Nobel Surface Chemistry at 909 Mueller Avenue told firefighters that they had an accidental spill of approximately two gallons of ethyl acrylate.

The company representatives said they had already cleaned up the spill, but there might be a residual odor in the air for the next several hours.

Assistant Chief Danny Hague with Special Operations said the fire department monitored the air at several locations in the city, and other than detecting the smell, it was determined that the odor did not present a health threat to the public.

The Hamilton County Air Pollution Control Bureau is investigating the incident.
